Good afternoon, as I know how motivating these messages are for those who are trying to have a baby, I dare to share with much affection my story of having achieved the desired pregnancy.
Well, this is the story of Angie and Juan:
We are a young couple with approximately twelve years of relationship, the last 6 in marriage. We never used protection or planned, as we both wanted to be parents at any moment that God considered it so. Since we got married, I started doing my prenatal checkups and had many tests to verify that I was in optimal condition to conceive, then it was my husband’s turn and after a simple and superficial spermogram they detected a varicocele that perhaps was preventing us from becoming parents. It was for this reason that we consulted a urologist who later operated on my husband, assuring us that in a maximum of six (6) months I would be pregnant, which did not happen. We consulted a couple more urologists who sent my husband treatments to achieve better mobility of his sperm but without achieving any positive results, which generated a lot of anxiety, frustration and uncertainty and logically made the relationship falter.
Thank God and after many consultations without much hope, I contacted a great friend, a specialist in human fertility, Dr. Juan Gabriel Martínez, with whom, due to the trust and friendship, we made consultations by phone calls and through WhatsApp messages we sent him the exams he asked us for, because at that time he was in Medellín and we live in Cartagena. After verifying all our studies, he diagnosed a condition in my husband called oligozoospermia, which refers to cases in which the semen has poor quality: a low amount of sperm, and is one of the most frequent findings in cases of male infertility.
Of course, when we found out about that, the world came crashing down on us, we were depressed, we cried too much and we even felt hopeless because unfortunately in Cartagena there was no specialized place to guide us, especially when they told us that the chances of conceiving naturally were reduced to 1%, even other doctors suggested sperm donation, a topic that although respectable, was not in our plans, we wanted our own children and the fruit of our love and effort. Added to our anxiety was that I began to have health complications and had to undergo an exploratory laparoscopy to remove some adhesions that apparently atrophied one of my ovaries. Today I see it as “Nothing out of this world”, but at that moment of uncertainty it became another obstacle for us who felt so frustrated in our desire to be parents, and where time plays an important role, since I was at the limit of a woman’s fertile age and my husband’s problem could worsen.
Dealing with an infertility issue is not easy for anyone, thank God we were always in very good hands, our doctor was also our friend, he told us about InSer and that it would soon open its doors in Cartagena, but the most important thing was that our chances of achieving our dream increased from 1% to 95% with one of the treatments that could be offered there and the one that particularly served us was through in vitro fertilization with icsi, a specialized assisted reproduction technique in which only one sperm in optimal condition would be required to be fertilized with my eggs. The process did not look easy at all, but seeing that our chances increased by 95% it was worth risking everything!!
We started the consultations in Cartagena and the entire ovulation induction treatment, when I was ready, we all traveled to Medellín, (including the doctor) to perform the collection of my eggs, taking a sample from my husband and subsequent embryo transfer.
I must confess that when we arrived at the clinic for the first time we felt like family, everyone welcomed us as if they had known us all our lives, with that affection, love, kindness, respect, but above all understanding, it is a warmth that we will never forget, everyone lived our emotion and motivated us a lot from the first day. The most exciting thing was knowing that we were not the only ones with that same purpose, that the issue of infertility is more common than it seems, but that if you get into the right hands you can achieve many positive things.
Despite my husband’s severe factor, we achieved 5 good quality embryos in our first collection according to the specialists, in fact in the first transfer we achieved a biochemical pregnancy, which although I now confess, was frustrating and regrettable, motivated us to continue without giving up, we knew that we would achieve it, faith had been given to us by God who put wonderful people in our path, what we did not know was when exactly it would happen, the important thing was that we would continue trying.
After that we did two more transfers, without obtaining the long-awaited positive, we even ran out of embryos from the first cycle, but thanks to the 4-cycle program we had many more options, and until the second collection a beautiful little embryo that was formed and transferred on its 5th day gave us the first positive test twelve days that we had waited for so many years!!!
After achieving this pregnancy, the controls continued in Inser Cartagena, where we heard our baby’s little heart beat for the first time and this continued until week 12 permanently with our doctor Juan Gabriel Martínez; however, today with 32 weeks, I can say that both he and the clinic in general have been very aware of our entire process and waiting for our most valuable treasure Abigail to be born, who has not been born, but who has our entire family full of beautiful feelings and joy. Today we are sure that we will be parents not only of her, because we have four little frozen embryos waiting for us to complete our happiness and give her at least one sibling.
After all this journey, I have nothing but words of gratitude, with God, with InSer both Medellín and Cartagena Headquarters, and especially with our doctor Juan Gabriel Martínez, because today we look forward to our little one with excitement and happiness.
This photo that I send you is just a small piece of the effort, the sacrifice, but more than that, the love, the perseverance and the determination that we had when we decided to look for our offspring, the fruit of our being, confirming that God uses science to do great things for humanity and how good it is that there are valuable people who develop it to cheer hearts. Looking for our baby has been our best gift and our best decision!!! We believe that if we had conceived her naturally, as we asked, we would not value the miracle of life so much.
I hope this message fills many parents who, like us, longed for that miracle with hope and courage, that it helps them not to give up, and to keep trying as many times as necessary. Thank you for everything!!
Sincerely,
Angie and Juan.
