The fertility specialists of the Antioquia Institute of Human Reproduction INSER, Doctors Juan Luis Giraldo and Walter Emilio Osorio, develop a new technique for the treatment of patients with infertility due to uterine fibroids.
Uterine fibroids are a clinical condition that affects approximately 10% of women of reproductive age (between 30 and 40 years of age), and has an indirect impact on fertility. Its treatment, until now, was through conventional techniques that did not allow the complete extraction of this benign tumor, however, with the novel development of the Bilumen cannula for the extraction of submucosal fibroids, this procedure can be carried out in a more efficient way, reaching areas of difficult access, without compromising the patient’s uterine cavity and increasing their chances of pregnancy in the future.
This device was patented by Doctors Juan Luis Giraldo and Walter Osorio before the Superintendence of Industry and Commerce, which will allow this technique to be socialized with the area of gynecology and fertility, to later begin to apply it and thus reduce the risks of injury to the uterus or endometrium during the extraction of fibroids.
According to Dr. Juan Luis Giraldo, conventional techniques used for the removal of uterine fibroids have a higher risk because they require the use of energy, which can cause thermal damage to the surrounding healthy tissue of the uterine wall with deleterious consequences on future fertility. However, with the use of the new Bilumen cannula can be performed the complete extraction of fibroids quickly and without putting the uterus and endometrium at risk, thus protecting the fertility of the patient and the restoration of her reproductive capacity.
Likewise, Dr. Walter Emilio Osorio, argues that patients with obstetric interest or with a diagnosis of infertility, require special treatment of these intrauterine alterations to really enhance their reproductive prognosis, so this surgical intervention is a great option to reduce the occurrence of injuries and thus increase the chances of pregnancy in the future.
Taking into account the above, hysteroscopic myomectomy with the use of Cánula Bilúmen becomes, more than a medical tool, an opportunity to perform safe procedures with a better prognosis for those women who need these interventions to overcome infertility conditions and make their desire to have a child come true.
