1978 is a year in which science changed forever. On July 25, he was born Louise Brown in the city of Bristol, England, and her parents, Jhon and Lesley, were fascinated by the arrival of their little girl. But the birth of this girl was not just another one: it was the first time in history that a baby was born through In Vitro Fertilization, a technique that has since been practiced all over the world and that has given the possibility to millions of couples in the world to achieve their most precious dream: To be parents.
Like many women, Louise’s mother had serious fertility problems: she had a defect in her fallopian tubes that made it impossible to achieve a pregnancy naturally. After nine years of trying to achieve a pregnancy without success, this English couple meets the doctors Patrick Steptoe and Robert EdwardS, who more than 20 years ago were researching how to achieve pregnancy in women with fertility problems similar to Lesley’s.
Despite the fact that the doctors warned this couple that the treatment would be experimental, and that the chances of success were practically nil, the Browns put themselves in the hands of the doctors. who managed to unite Lesley’s eggs with Jhon’s sperm in a laboratory. Once the embryo was formed, it was introduced into the mother’s uterus , who, with great expectations and hopes, verified a few weeks later what she had been waiting for so long: the pregnancy of her first daughter.
The doctors in charge of this experiment never before proven in science, knew that they had in their hands a procedure that would not be exempt from social scandal and controversy. For this reason, Lesley’s pregnancy was carried in the most absolute secrecy: even on the day of Louise’s birth, the doctors carried out the cesarean section in complete darkness, only with the help of a flashlight, and the clinic where little Louise was born was guarded by the police.
Almost 40 years have passed since the first “test tube baby” was born and the story of Lesley, Jhon and Louise has been repeated all over the world, with results so successful that this technique has become the star treatment of fertility centers around the planet. And although success rates vary according to the age of the woman and the fertility complications in each couple, every day new findings are found to make In Vitro Fertilization a safe treatment without side effects for women who venture on this path of motherhood.
Today, Louise is the mother of Cameron John, has written books about his amazing story, and continues to give interviews about his case to all media outlets on five continents. Like her, millions of children have been born through In Vitro Fertilization since then, filling with joy couples who one day believed that their desire to be parents had vanished forever.
