The INSER Eje Cafetero clinic located in the city of Pereira, led by the specialist in Human Reproduction, Dr. Carlos López Clavijo, has become a national benchmark for the treatment of congenital uterine malformations in patients with complex diagnoses that require laparoscopic surgical processes.
This new modality of intervention in Colombia is led by Dr. López, and aims to help those women who have gynecological alterations, without putting their fertility at risk due to common complications that can occur in the middle of conventional techniques that require abdominal incisions.
One of the most outstanding and unique cases reported in the country with this laparoscopic technique is the treatment of a 17-year-old patient with cervical and vaginal agenesis who predicted a hysterectomy (removal of the uterus) due to the complexity of her diagnosis. Despite this, thanks to the application of this new intervention modality, it was possible to correct the malformation and preserve the fertility of the patient, who three years after the procedure has regular periods and great possibilities of pregnancy in the future.
According to Dr. Carlos López, “the interesting thing about the technique is that the cases that have been reported have mostly been open and have presented complications. In this particular case, what I did was a different technique by laparoscopy, in which I introduced part of the uterus into the vagina, avoiding narrowing without leaving probes for prolonged times, which decreases the risk of infection and increases the chances of success.”
Thanks to this new laparoscopic treatment modality, in Colombia it will be possible to treat those patients with uterine malformations who previously risked their fertility in conventional procedures; The laparoscopic technique will correct these alterations while taking care of the woman’s reproductive system.
