Intrauterine insemination, an alternative to make more parents happy

One of the most popular human fertility treatments around the world is precisely intrauterine insemination, better known as artificial insemination, a low-complexity procedure with very good results for couples who have tried to have a baby for a long time without success. Learn more in the following report.

When it comes to the treatments that currently exist in assisted reproduction, intrauterine insemination is one of the best known among the general population. Many even tend to confuse it with other techniques such as  In Vitro fertilization, a treatment that uses completely different procedures to achieve pregnancy in couples with fertility problems.

Intrauterine insemination is a treatment in which sperm (after being obtained through a semen sample and processed in a laboratory) are introduced into the woman’s uterus to achieve pregnancy during her ovulation period. Previously, the treating physician orders a hormonal treatment in the woman in order to achieve the  stimulation in her ovaries and monitors her menstrual cycle from several ultrasounds, in order to proceed with the insemination process at the time of her fertile period.

Currently, there are two types of intrauterine insemination: homologous insemination or AHI (which is performed with the sperm of the husband or partner) and insemination with sperm from an anonymous donor (also known as DAI).

Intrauterine insemination is recommended in couples who suffer from diseases or difficulties in their fertility such as: premature ejaculation, vaginismus, erectile dysfunction, alteration in sperm number and motility, cervical problems, mild endometriosis, unknown infertility or HIV/AIDS.

The probability of pregnancy per cycle and the number of cycles to be performed depends on the diagnosis, age, sperm quality and the number of follicles developed.  Globally, it is known that the pregnancy rate per insemination cycle oscillates around 15%. Regarding the number of cycles performed, the total number of couples who are going to achieve pregnancy with intrauterine insemination, 90% will do so in their first 3 or 4 cycles.
