The Nativity

Christmas or Nativity is the Christian celebration of the birth of a baby conceived unnaturally and rather, miraculously in a woman. The Bible has other accounts of conceptions considered impossible, such as the pregnancy of Sarah, an elderly woman who was already hopeless to conceive.  Other religions and myths also speak of unnatural or supernatural conceptions. In the collective imagination there has existed, for a long time, the possibility of conception by means other than those offered by nature. Medical technology has made it a reality that many of these conceptions considered miraculous are now achievable and routine.  Never as before, a couple has options to achieve their pregnancy.

Current miraculous conceptions include:

  • conception when the man does not have sperm in the ejaculate (azoospermia) using a testicular biopsy and sperm microinjection, ICSI
  • pregnancy in older women, thanks to in vitro fertilization and oocyte donation
  • conception of healthy babies when parents are carriers of inherited diseases using preimplantation genetic diagnosis
  • conception after a woman has lost both tubes using in vitro fertilization
  • pregnancy after chemotherapy and radiotherapy for cancer, freezing the gametes (sperm and oocytes) before therapy.
  • Pregnancy after tubal ligation or vasectomy using microsurgical reconstruction

In many other situations such as: couples with infertility for many years, problems with sperm, ovulation problems, unexplained infertility, sexual difficulties, endometriosis, obstruction of the fallopian tubes or vas deferens, it is possible to use some assisted reproduction technique to obtain a pregnancy.
Fertility problems are common. Out of every ten couples, one or two may have difficulty achieving pregnancy.  In this time that we celebrate the miraculous conceptions of the past, it is good to remember that modern miracles exist and that every couple with fertility problems should not be discouraged as it is quite possible to find a solution for them
