In Vitro Laboratory, What Happens there and how is it Possible?

When talking about In Vitro laboratories, many questions arise regarding what is done there and why they are so important in fertility processes.

The place where “the magic happens”, as these spaces are known, are destined to create life through science, faith and love, which makes them the cradle of those babies who are conceived through reproduction techniques.

Behind a reproduction laboratory you will find a large, small and microscopic world, which is led by a team of professionals in the area of bacteriology and biology. Some of the profiles that are part of our team at INSER are:

  • Embryologists: these are professionals who have specialized in reproduction techniques, and are trained to manipulate gametes and perform the procedures necessary to carry out fertilization and cryopreservation of eggs and sperm.
  • Andrologists: professionals dedicated to the study and treatment of male samples. Their specialty focuses on the care and analysis of sperm for the proper selection of gametes for fertilization.

Any procedure that requires the manipulation of gametes (eggs and sperm) is performed within an In Vitro laboratory.

Some of the most common are:

  • In Vitro Fertilization: the ideal space and time is sought to select the sperm and fertilize the egg in the laboratory (outside the woman’s natural system). This is in order to increase the chances of pregnancy by performing fertilization.
  • Embryo culture: after the egg is fertilized, it divides and becomes an embryo that will be permanently monitored (between 3 and 5 days) to take care of its development and be selected for later transfer.
  • Cryopreservation of eggs or semen: through specialized techniques, gametes and embryos are vitrified or “frozen” at temperatures below 0, in order to be used in the future for the search for pregnancy.
  • Sample analysis (spermogram): a complete study of the sperm is performed for assisted reproduction treatments, where the shape, quality, vitality, mobility, etc. are observed.

There are multiple equipment that are essential in the manipulation of gametes within a laboratory. Some of these are:

  • Microscope: it is one of the essential tools in In Vitro fertilization processes, since it allows observing the gametes in sizes visible to the human eye.
  • Incubators: essential equipment in a laboratory that helps us simulate the natural conditions of the human body, giving the embryo the possibility of developing (temperature, humidity, PH, etc.).
  • Micromanipulation equipment: complementary tool of the microscope that allows the manipulation of gametes for the application of reproduction technique (ICSI, biopsy, etc.).
  • Laser: tool that is used to invade the embryo and thus perform embryonic biopsies.
  • Nitrogen tanks: they are fundamental tools for the storage of gametes and embryos in liquid nitrogen. It is used for cryopreservation by being at temperatures below 180°

Although there are many procedures and techniques that are carefully applied within an assisted reproduction laboratory, the largest component that INSER gives the magical touch to each treatment is the love and faith that each member of the team puts into their work to help make the dream of having a child come true for each family that trusts in our work.
