Can I Experience Infertility Issues when Trying for a Second Child?

When talking about infertility, it is often thought that this condition only occurs in families who are trying for their first pregnancy or have an underlying condition that prevents them from achieving a natural gestation. However, it is important to know that this diagnosis can also occur in couples who wish to have a second and/or third baby, or who have already had a previous gestation in the past.

Secondary infertility is the diagnosis given to those couples who wish to have more children, but who face situations that make it difficult for them to achieve a new pregnancy naturally.

There are multiple causes that could lead a couple to experience this condition. Some of these are:

  • Complications during the birth of the first baby: If hemorrhages occurred during natural childbirth or there was an infection from a cesarean section, some situations could arise that lead to secondary infertility.
  • Pregnancy losses: If there was a loss and complications associated with infections occurred, or adequate care was not received during this process, the risks for trying for a new pregnancy could increase.
  • Traumas or accidents that compromise the genital area in men: If the partner suffered events that affect their testicles or was exposed to risky situations that affect their fertility (such as high temperatures, testosterone intake, etc.), the ability to achieve a second pregnancy naturally may be compromised.
  • Change of partner: If the first pregnancy occurred with another person, it is important to keep in mind that, when trying to have a new baby with another partner, situations associated with difficulties conceiving could arise. It all depends on the underlying conditions or genetic history of both the woman and the man.
  • Couples who faced an infertility condition during their first pregnancy: Those families who have an underlying situation that affects their reproductive system may experience the same difficulties when trying for a second pregnancy.
  • Advanced age: When a lot of time passes between the first pregnancy and the search for a second, difficulties associated with the woman’s ovarian reserve could arise, if she is over 35 years of age.

Yes. Just as with primary infertility (trying for the first baby), secondary infertility also has treatment alternatives that help all those couples who wish to expand their family with the arrival of a new baby.

It is recommended to consult with a fertility specialist when:

  • You are under 35 years old and have been trying unsuccessfully for more than a year.
  • You are over 36 years old and have been trying to get pregnant for 6 months.
  • You changed partners and want to check that everything is okay to start trying for a pregnancy.
  • You have an underlying condition that makes it difficult for you to achieve a natural pregnancy.
