40th Anniversary of In Vitro Fertilization

Babies born through In Vitro Fertilization are called “the golden babies” because their parents are so convinced that their arrival in the world is the most important matter of their lives that they are definitely wanted, cared for and loved in such a special way that only those who have gone through that experience can explain what their children mean for their lives. The problem is that many believe that, due to the way they were conceived, they can present problems in their physical and mental development, and, consequently, be different from other children.

Since the birth of Louise Brown, 40 years ago, assisted reproduction techniques have been perfected to such an extent that the success rates in these treatments have been growing over the years. After four decades of studies and research, many conclusions have been reached regarding this topic.

In recent studies conducted in Europe, it was determined that no substantial differences were found in cognitive and psychomotor development in children born after In Vitro Fertilization versus children born naturally. In addition, children born through IVF were found to have a similar risk of being born with birth defects as babies conceived naturally.

Other studies find an increase of up to 1.4% more abnormalities in children as a result of In Vitro Fertilization. This increase is due more to the health conditions that caused the infertility of the parents than to the assisted reproduction process as such.

Regarding their social development, it was shown that children resulting from In Vitro Fertilization had a very good functioning in their social relationships and very good relationships with their families, even better than those of naturally conceived children.

In addition, in the In Vitro Fertilization process, previous studies can be carried out to know the detection of possible genetic abnormalities before the transfer of the embryo in the woman’s uterus. The performance of these studies, called PGD and PGS, is recommended if there is a possibility that the embryos are affected by chromosomal alterations or genetic diseases that may be associated with the non-implantation of the embryos, pregnancy loss or the birth of a child with physical problems and/or mental retardation or genetic condition.

In Vitro Fertilization is a very good alternative not only to have a safe pregnancy but also to have healthy and healthy children.
