Know what ovulation induction is all about

One of the most frequent problems that women have when it comes to getting pregnant is anovulation, which is the difficulty of the ovaries to release a mature egg in the middle of the menstrual cycle. Problems such as polycystic ovaries, obesity and disorders of the thyroid or adrenal glands can interfere with this important phase of a woman’s menstrual cycle, which is essential when conceiving a baby.

To treat this problem, there is a low-complexity treatment called ovulation induction in which, by stimulating the ovaries through a series of medications, The egg is expelled so that it can be fertilized by sperm and thus achieve pregnancy.

How is this treatment performed?

Ovulation induction is effected by the use of drugs whose action is similar to that of certain hormones produced by women.

The treatment begins when the woman informs her doctor of the exact day on which her menstruation arrives, so that he can perform an ultrasound and thus assess the state of the uterus and ovaries. At that time, the use of medicines to achieve ovulation begins.

There are different types of medications to achieve ovulation induction, which can come in tablets and injections. The tablets are simpler to use although they are less effective, but they have the advantage that, once the effective dose is established orally, they can be used at home without the need to be monitored by a doctor. FSH hormone injections are more potent but must be used every month under medical supervision.

Once the proper development of the follicles has been obtained, other medications are administered to achieve the final maturation of the eggs, and then, the most appropriate time is programmed to guide sexual relations in the couple, artificial insemination or recruitment for fertility treatment.

It is often necessary to perform one or two more ultrasounds to identify the day on which the ovary is going to ovulate and thus know which are the days with the highest probability of pregnancy.

This treatment should always be performed under medical supervision to achieve the expected results. Visit our  offices in Bogotá, Medellín, Pereira, Rionegro and Cartagena and take the first step to make your dream of being a mother a reality.
