RESILIENCE, what it is and how to develop it in fertility processes

Having children and starting a family is perhaps one of the strongest desires of the human being, however, making this dream come true is not as simple as it seems. Today, 1 in 6 couples in the world is facing a situation they never imagined living with: infertility.

Over the years and the evolution of the being, motherhood and fatherhood have become a feeling that not everyone wants to experience, however, when this thought addresses the mind of the human being and becomes a dream or purpose, all emotions and projects are focused on making this wish come true.

Although for many couples the search for a baby becomes a quick and natural process, for others the path becomes more complex as the months or years go by and the longed-for positive is not achieved.

Just at the moment that the dream begins to be postponed due to circumstances beyond the control of the will, is when the emotions and frustrations generated by facing the “ideal” future with the obstacles of reality begin to manifest. That is when RESILIENCE begins to play an important and decisive role in continuing the path.

What is resilience?

Resilience is the ability to overcome situations of adversity or difficulty. It is facing reality looking for a way to overcome in order to continue or transform.

Why is resilience important in fertility processes?

In an “ideal” world where looking for a baby is considered a natural process that only involves the desire to be parents, an infertility diagnosis becomes a test to overcome to make that dream of having a child come true.

The moment a condition is identified that affects the search for a natural pregnancy, the couple begins to experience sensations and thoughts that can generate frustration and fear when their desire is threatened, however, when assimilating and understanding the situation, the decision is made to face fears, overcome adversity and look for possibilities to achieve the dream of becoming parents.

How to work on resilience?

1. Worry about yourself and do things you enjoy: Taking care of yourself will allow you to maintain the balance you need between mind and body, to be prepared for difficult situations that require resilience.

2. Transform obstacles into opportunities: Although there are situations that cannot be avoided and are part of life, having an open and positive attitude can help you see opportunities in moments of fear.

3. Accept that change is part of life: When you are faced with a complex situation that you cannot change and it modifies your plans, accepting the circumstances and seeing what aspect you can alter to improve your present or future, can help you build new beginnings.

4. Never lose hope: Taking refuge in an optimistic vision of life will allow you to open doors to new opportunities. Work for what you want and put aside what you fear.

5. Build support networks: Having a group of people who listen to you and support you in a positive way will allow you to strengthen your confidence and not feel alone in complex moments.
