Male fertility, the myths you didn’t know about

Talking about fertility will never be easy. Regardless of the reasons why a couple cannot have children, facing a diagnosis of infertility creates both physical and emotional problems between two people who have a common goal: to become parents.

For years, it was believed that the reasons for infertility in a couple lay entirely in the woman’s health. This conception meant that many people did not seek specialized help when it came to getting pregnant and, therefore, their dream of starting a family was permanently postponed. But, thanks to the advances in science and the cultural advancement that people have regarding the issue of sexuality and fertility, now couples are much more involved in finding solutions to overcome their difficulties and thus form a family.
It is important to remember that, currently, it is known that 30% of fertility problems in a couple are of male origin, either due to family history or diseases such as varicocele, mumps or sexually transmitted infections. Also, male fertility can be affected by exposure to chemicals, daily medications, exposure to high temperatures such as ovens and boilers, radiation, X-rays and harmful habits such as frequent consumption of tobacco, liquor and hallucinogenic drugs.

Myths to be overcome
Despite the advances, many couples continue to have misconceptions about fertility. Perhaps one of the most frequent is that only women should have frequent check-ups to take care of their fertility, and that only they should take care of their mental and physical health when looking for a baby. That is why many men have never consulted an expert, and that is why they do not know the possible difficulties that can put their fertility at risk in the short and long term.

Also, many people believe that if a man already has children, he has every chance of having more in the future. The truth is that both men and women can suffer from secondary infertility, which is what occurs when it comes to achieving a new pregnancy when you already have offspring.
Finally, it is believed that women are the only ones who suffer from the issue of infertility and that men handle the issue with a certain coldness and disinterest. The truth is that men can also suffer from depression, anxiety and stress with the issue of forming a family even if they do not verbalize their feelings and doubts, which means that psychological accompaniment when facing the issue of infertility should be for both members of the couple, regardless of the causes of it.
