When a couple is looking for a baby, the term “ovulation” becomes part of their daily lives. Knowing exactly what a woman’s fertile days are is key to achieving pregnancy, which makes many people look for information on this subject to increase the chances of conceiving a baby in the shortest possible time.
And although many women manage to identify the day of their ovulation by presenting abdominal cramps, changes in their body temperature or increased vaginal humidity, others find it difficult to know when their ovulation occurs, which makes the search for a pregnancy ineffective in the first instance.
But what is ovulation?
A woman’s menstrual cycle, which begins on the first day of her menstruation until the day her next cycle arrives, can vary between 23 and 31 days, with an average of 28 days. The ovulation period, which is when the mature egg is released from the ovary waiting for it to be fertilized by a sperm, usually occurs right in the middle of the cycle. If the egg is not fertilized, the next menstruation will be given a few weeks later, but, if the egg manages to join the sperm, it will implant in the uterus to start a new pregnancy.
To predict the most fertile days in women, it is recommended to track a woman’s menstrual cycles and subtract 14 or 16 days from the date her next period is expected to occur, depending on the length of her cycle. This count becomes even more effective when the woman is regular in her menstrual cycles and does not have diseases that can alter her menstrual cycle.
It should be clarified that many women are not so “exact” when it comes to presenting their ovulation, so it is necessary for them to resort to other aids to verify exactly when their fertile period occurs. This can be determined with the help of ultrasounds performed by a specialist or by the so-called ovulation test, a kit of home tests that determine the increase in the hormone LH, responsible for female ovulation. To do these tests, the woman must collect the first urine of the morning from day 12 of her cycle for several days until the test shows a positive result, which indicates that the woman is in her fertile period.
Many women may have ovulation disorders due to hormonal imbalances or some diseases in their reproductive health. To check the origin of these disorders, it is necessary to go to a doctor specializing in human reproduction and thus learn more about the state of health of the future mother.
