One of the greatest frustrations that a couple who wants to have children must overcome is that, despite achieving their long-awaited positive after an incessant search, they lose their pregnancy in the first weeks of gestation. Pain, sadness and depression invade these couples, so much so that many discard the idea of looking for a new baby for fear of repeating that painful episode for their lives.
Hence it is that science has been interested in these cases and has sheltered them under the same concept. This situation has been called Recurrent Pregnancy Loss (REP) and has been of great interest to the medical community, which has investigated the reasons why these situations occur to a growing number of couples around the world.
And while Recurrent Pregnancy Loss isn’t exactly labeled as infertility, it’s known to happen to at least 3% of couples who are looking for a baby. Also, it is recognized that the diagnosis is only made in couples who have lost three or more pregnancies in the first 20 weeks of gestation.
The causes for Recurrent Pregnancy Loss to occur in a couple can be several. Are those of genetic order (when the parents have chromosomal predispositions to form embryos with genetic alterations incompatible with life that lead to early abortions) uterine conditions (when the woman has malformations in her uterus that complicate the normal development of pregnancy such as uterine septum, polyps, fibroids, etc.) and those of immunological origin (when the woman’s immune system begins to produce antibodies that cause an imbalance that generates a state of hypercoagulability of the blood causing thrombi to form in the placenta and recurrent pregnancy loss).
In addition, it is known that endocrine conditions such as thyroid disorders, diabetes, prolactin production, and deficiency in the formation of progesterone in the ovary can be causes of recurrent pregnancy losses. Finally, it is known that some Infectious diseases can lead to recurrent pregnancy loss, so the couple must undergo a complete study to evaluate their health conditions when they have three or more pregnancies that end in a miscarriage.
When a couple has lost several pregnancies, it is necessary to go to an expert in gynecology and infertility to evaluate their case and find solutions so that their pregnancies come to term. In most cases, the specialist orders a series of medical examinations for both the man and the woman to find the origin of the problem and seek solutions with high and low complexity medical treatments , depending on the conditions of each couple.
Also, couples who have gone through several losses are recommended to go to a specialist in psychology to talk about their fears about this issue and how to turn this experience into something that strengthens life as a couple.
