With the commitment to train suitable professionals in the area of human fertility and train them on how to approach the infertile couple in Colombia, the Inser Human Fertility Institute created 20 years ago various residency and specialized continuing education programs. Learn more in the following article.
In the nineties, infertility was an unknown topic in Colombia. Although at that time there were also many couples with difficulties in having a child, it was very difficult to find specialists to diagnose and treat the problem in the country. In addition to that, there were few doctors who were inclined to train in the area of human reproduction, because to do so they had to travel outside the country to complement their studies.
This panorama changed almost two decades ago, when the founding specialists of Inser realized that it was necessary to share their knowledge with the academic community of the country. To do this, they signed an agreement with CES University so that students in the last semesters of Medicine could do their clinical rotation at their facilities and thus learn more about the approach to couples with reproductive problems.
The response of this program was such that other universities wanted their students to come to Inser to train in this interesting area of health. The University of Antioquia, the Pontifical Bolivarian University and the University of Cartagena were the next institutions that were interested in creating academic ties with Inser through medical residencies, which generally last one month and they manage to positively impact the student in their student development. Currently this program works hand in hand with the University of Antioquia, CES University, Pontifical Bolivarian University, University of Manizales, University of Cartagena, Autonomous University Foundation of the Americas and the University of El Rosario.
Thanks to the excellent reception that these internships had, Inser gives way to the Subspecialization in Human Reproduction or Inser Fellow, in which gynecologists / obstetricians from prestigious institutions such as the University of Panama, El Rosario University, Javeriana University, University of Cordoba, University of Manizales, among others, They can carry out a complete training program where they accompany the specialists throughout the process of accompanying the couple who wishes to have a child through assisted reproduction.
In this subspecialization, the student will be able to conduct research on the subject of human fertility, conduct seminars and clinical trials on the subject, write specialized articles in national and international journals, and provide medical assistance at Inser’s facilities in the country. So far, there are 14 professionals who have taken this program with excellent results both for their professional career and for patient care.
The Subspecialization, which lasts two years, allows the student to approach the field of fertility from day-to-day practice, knowing the intimacies of the various services and treatments offered at Inser and learning from practice all the processes that are carried out to achieve a pregnancy in a couple with fertility difficulties.
As explained by Dr. Fidel Cano, a specialist in Human Reproduction and Founder of Inser in Colombia, it is essential that future specialists have direct contact with patients who struggle with infertility, because in this way they can understand the background that this medical area brings. But beyond reading an article on the internet or a book on the subject, Patient contact is vital for many students to understand what it means to deal with couples who are diagnosed with infertility. By knowing this problem head-on, the apprentice is positively impacted on a personal and professional level, as he is confronted with reality, places himself in the role of motherhood, sees the problem directly and sets a lesson for the rest of his life”
