Laparoscopy and fertility

What is diagnostic and surgical laparoscopy?

Diagnostic and surgical laparoscopy is a widely used technique in medicine, especially in the fields of gynecology and fertility. Learn more in the following article.
Many women must go through a laparoscopy at some point in their lives to detect and treat potential health problems. And although many feel afraid at the time of undergoing this intervention,  The truth is that laparoscopy is a very safe technique when it comes to diagnosing and correcting abnormalities in your body, especially in your reproductive system and thus improve your fertility.

The novel technique consists of making an incision in the navel to pass carbon dioxide through a probe and thus be able to manipulate the internal organs. The surgeon then passes a probe and video camera to look at the abdominal cavity and pelvis. At the end of the surgery, the gas and laparoscopic equipment are removed, and the incisions are closed.
Diagnostic and surgical laparoscopy is a minimally invasive intervention in which excellent results and a faster recovery of the patient are achieved.    In the area of fertility, this intervention is used to analyze:

  • Diagnosis of uterine malformations
  • Chronic pelvic pain
  • Tubal ligation and recanalization
  • Endometriosis
  • Ectopic pregnancy
  • Management of ovarian cysts and oophorectomy
  • Management of tubal abnormalities and salpingectomy
  • Ovarian drilling
  • Myomectomy and hysterectomy

As it is a surgery that requires general anesthesia, it is important to perform it in the hands of an expert and in a health center with all the necessary requirements to take care of the patient’s life in case of a complication. Some of them include internal infections and injuries, although they are not common.
Before a laparoscopy, the patient must follow some instructions such as suspending the use of aspirin or blood thinners, quitting smoking and drinking alcohol, following a special diet days before surgery, fasting for several hours before the intervention, among others.
