Ovarian reserve Why is it so important in women’s fertility?

When talking about fertility, it is common to hear phrases that refer to a woman’s biological clock, or to the aging or loss of eggs. But…, have you ever sat down to really think about what this means and how much impact it has on the search for pregnancy?

Over the years, the human body faces multiple physical and internal changes that directly affect the lifestyles of each person, however, little is said about a silent factor that affects the reproductive system of women, and with it the possibility of achieving a pregnancy naturally: THE OVARIAN RESERVE.

When talking about ovarian reserve, we refer to the quantity and quality of eggs/oocytes that a woman has in her ovaries in a certain period of time.

Although it is thought that egg production is frequent and is carried out every month, it is important to demystify this thought, and to know that women only produce oocytes during their fetal stage, and it is the ovaries that are responsible for caring for them and maturing them to release them and be fertilized every month after the first menstruation.

During the gestation period (in the mother’s womb), female babies produce the total number of eggs that they will keep throughout their lives.

On average, the woman’s reproductive system produces 6-7 million eggs in intrauterine life, however, by the beginning of reproductive life that begins with menstruation they have decreased to 300,000/400,000, which shows that for this stage there is a reduced number of oocytes that month by month decreases more when the ovary begins to release eggs to be fertilized.

The possibility that a 20-year-old woman has of achieving a pregnancy is approximately 35% per month; at age 35 it is 15%, and after age 40 it is 3-5% per month.

Although the ovaries are responsible for taking care of the eggs, it is important to understand that they are the same age as the woman, and can even suffer from rapid aging, directly affecting their quality and quantity.

Although advanced age is one of the factors that is most related to LOW OVARIAN RESERVE, it cannot be attributed as the only reason. Genetic issues, autoimmune diseases, infections, medications and even environmental factors can also affect this condition.

Although it is a condition that can occur frequently, there are no specific symptoms that can lead to this diagnosis, except for prolonged unsuccessful attempts to get pregnant.

Despite this, there are cases that can lead to suspicion. For example, women with autoimmune, cancer, or genetic diseases.

YES, having low ovarian reserve is not synonymous with infertility. With the support of a fertility specialist, a diagnosis can be reached that allows the level of complexity to be identified in order to define the path to follow in the search for a pregnancy.

It is possible to achieve this naturally, but in more severe cases, there are also alternatives for reproductive techniques that increase the chances of having a child with low ovarian reserve.
